Add Papers to Your academia.edu Profile

Academia.edu is still I think a somewhat experimental social media website. It hasn't got a lot of momentum with faculty members yet - most of the participants are grad students. This is true at Crawford School too. 27 Crawford people are on academia.edu but there are only four faculty members and two post-docs among them. This is because I think the website is most useful for people who don't

ISEE 2012 Call for Papers

Abstracts are due by 15th November. At this point, I'm not planning on attending. The last ISEE meeting I went to was in Montreal in 2004. But that was far to travel. I have enough international travel to do anyway and it is during time when I'll possibly be needing to be teaching. But if you haven't been to one, it could be worth it. The first one I went to was Stockholm in 1992, the second

Links to Working Paper Versions

I've added links to working paper versions of my publications where those exist to me to publications pages. For the most recent publications that aren't yet in RePEc the main link is to the working paper. My older publications, of course, don't have online working paper versions and neither do most of my natural science publications.

Moved Office Again!

My new office is just across the corridor from my old one in Room 2.83 JGC (Crawford Buidling #132). My new phone number is 6125-3366. This is my 4th office since starting at ANU in April 2009!

Appointment in Crawford School

As of today I am an associate professor * in the Crawford School at ANU though only for the duration of 2011 at the moment. I'll be moving to the Crawford Building some time soon. In the coming semester I am teaching POGO 8016 The Economic Way of Thinking I, which is part of the Graduate Diploma in Policy and Governance program.* This rank is equivalent to full professor in the US system or at

Back Home

I'm finally back from my trip to Europe (mainly work) and Asia (mainly family visit/vacation). As an Australian the only country we visited that seemed expensive overall was Denmark. Sweden no longer seems to be a terribly expensive country as it once seemed to be. The Big Mac index doesn't agree though. Thailand, our last stop, is of course way cheap but I noticed that drinks in Starbucks don't

Switching from html to pdf

Since 1995 I have had a file called sterncv.html on the web. It was created by Laura Guild at Boston University and has followed me around the world till eventually it settled on sterndavidi.com. But now I have deleted it and switched to a pdf CV only. I still have all my publications listed on two webpages with links to RePEc or journal websites. The reason I made this change are:1. Most other

Jobs Websites

VoxEU now has a jobs website. It has a lot of European jobs listed, which nicely complements the U.S. focus of JOE (JObs for Economists). For Australian jobs, UniJobs is pretty comprehensive. Just put the keywords you are interested in into their search engine.

New Office

I just moved office. I'm now in Room 4038 in the Coombs Building which is in the area occupied by Resource Management in the Asia Pacific though I'm still attached to the Arndt-Corden Division or Department. My phone number is 6125-1609. But the best way to contact me as usual is by e-mail. I like this office better than my old one actually. It's bigger, has a real wooden desk, and has much more

IPCC AR5 WGIII Authors Announced

This won't get much attention in this country, today :), but the IPCC has formally announced the lead and coordinating lead authors for the IPCC 5th Assessment Report.

RePEc Expands Listings

Christian Zimmermann lays out recent and upcoming changes to RePEc which will include somewhat expanded rankings. I think this is a good move, but I still think that they should just list the top 20 or 25% for all the different rankings. Why list the top 25% for countries and US States but only the top 10% for fields?

Some Things Coming Up...

I haven't blogged much this month as I've been very busy, mainly on trying to finish my EERH Hub project and set up the next stage in my career. A couple of the things coming up soon:Frank Jotzo will be giving a presentation at the Crawford School at 12:30 on Tuesday analyzing the emissions reduction targets put forward by countries at Copenhagen. This will include our joint work on China and

Sounds Like a Headline from the Onion!

But it's a New York Times article: Union College Finally Admits Where It Is. I lived for 5 years in Troy, NY about 25km east of Schenectady and also in the Albany metro area when I was teaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I think that Troy is worse than Schenectady if anything. I first arrived there in March for an interview and the cab-ride from the railway station in Rensselaer (I came

Paul Samuelson

The big news today in economics is the death of Paul Samuelson. I don't have much to add to what is being said except that I am one of those first introduced to the topic via his textbook. We used it as the English textbook in the "Introductory Economics" course I took in my first year at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1985-6. There was also a very terse textbook in Hebrew titled "Mavo

Pedigree Bias in Economics

At least anecdotally I think it is true that economics has a pedigree bias. Good departments tend to hire people from a limited subset of top schools. This is just as true in Australia as in the U.S. There are very few ANU economists who don't have a PhD from either a reasonably decent or even top U.S. school, a top British university (few if any less senior people) or ANU itself. The bias in

Looking for Academic Economics Jobs in Australia

In the past not many foreign institutions advertised on the American Economic Association's jobs website JOE. But this seems to have changed and now most leading Australian universities are advertising there. Not all these positions appear to be advertised on UniJobs, which I think is the leading Australian academic job site. I've had a couple of recent discussions with people looking to do PhDs

ARC Future Fellowships

The results were announced of the first round of the ARC (Australian Research Council) Future Fellowships. These are fellowships tenable for 4 years at an Australian institution for "mid-career" researchers. 200 fellowships were awarded out of 975 proposals submitted. ANU got 21 of the fellowships, though its success rate of 26% was not a lot higher than average. Universities such as Deakin and

Europe Research Links

Today I attended a workshop on research collaboration between Australia and Europe. My impression was that in the areas I work in it's probably pretty hard to get funded by the European Union. Ironically, it seemed that if you have specific expertise about Australia you are more likely to be able to join a funded project. 2/3 of EU funding goes to FP-7 (Framework Program 7) "Cooperation" projects
